In different water systems like water basins, reservoirs, storage tanks, algae can form. These algae cause a reduction in life span of the water systems as well as an increase in energy consumption and maintenance requirements.
In greenhouses or in the field, scale can develop on cups of sprinkler or irrigation systems. These limescale deposits cause the cups to become clogged and insufficient water can be released. When there is not enough water coming from the sprinkler systems, crops will not get enough water and a poor harvest is guaranteed. Bacterial colonisation can also occur in the sprinkler/irrigation systems. When this water ends up in the cattle’s drinking troughs, it can have serious consequences. A common phenomenon in crops is Fusarium and Phytophthora bacteria.
In the water or other liquids present in a plant, there may be an unbalanced germ count coming from bacterial colonisations in biofilm. Nowadays with new and more strict regulations on germ counts, farmers can encounter issues with controlling the germ counts. As a result, a farmer can be fined and obligated to shut down parts of the farm.
Cattle can get sick from bacteria that end up in drinking water. In some cases, this can lead to mortality.To get the cattle through, the farmer has to use a lot of antibiotics. Not only does this cost a lot of money, but it is also bad for the cattle their appetite.
